How, When & Where It All Began
Underwater Hockey was born in the chilly winter of 1954 in Portsmouth, England, when a group of divers from the Southsea Sub‑Aqua Club (BSAC Branch No. 9) sought a new way to keep active during the off-season. Led by Alan Blake, they created a new game called Octopush, played on the pool floor with a weighted “squid” of a puck, short sticks (or “pushers”), snorkels, fins, and masks.
In early 1955, Octopush held its first mini-tournament between teams from Southsea, Bournemouth, and Brighton—marking the beginning of its competitive tradition.

Underwater Hockey in Singapore – A Rising Power Beneath the Waves
Singapore has quickly emerged as a powerhouse in Underwater Hockey, solidifying its position as one of Asia’s strongest contenders. At the SEA Games, our national Men’s and Women’s teams delivered an outstanding performance, securing a combined total of 4 gold medals. Both teams triumphed in their respective events, marking a proud milestone that firmly places Singapore on the regional Underwater Hockey map.
At the 8th CMAS Asian Championships 2024 in Singapore, our team delivered a commanding performance, securing first place in the Open Elite 6×6 and second place in the Women’s Elite 6×6. The following year, this success continued at the 2025 CMAS Intercontinental Championships in Kuala Lumpur. Here, Singapore’s elite squads impressively finished third overall (ranking first in Asia), with our Youth U19 team also placing fourth (second in Asia).
